Aerospace Engineering: Aerodynamics from Gliders to Rockets

This course provides students with the fundamental knowledge and experience to apply mathematical, scientific, and engineering principles to the design, development, and evolution of aircraft, space vehicles and their operating systems. In the classroom, students will engage in creative thinking and problem‐solving activities using software that allows students to design, test, and evaluate a variety of air and space vehicles, their systems, and launching, guidance and control procedures. Students will build and test airfoils, gliders and model rockets,as well as fly a plane in a flight simulator program.  Students can expect to work with and/or be mentored by professionals in the aviation/aerospace career field from around the Greater Kansas City metropolitan area.

 

Note: Students need to choose 2 of the following 3 courses (Digital Electronics, Computer Integrated Manufacturing, Aerospace Engineering) to make a full-year selection.

Prerequisites:
  • Grade: 11 or 12
  • 2.5 GPA (Unweighted)
  • Algebra II  with a B- or better
  • 90% Attendance
  • Outside class Internet access is required.

Recommended Math and Engineering Proficiency:

Average Math and Engineering grade: B- or higher

PLTW Member School Prerequisites:

  • Introduction to Engineering Design PLTW
  • Principles of Engineering PLTW

Recommended:

  • Geometry
  • Physics (completed or concurrent enrollment)

High School Credits: 1.5 units

LSR7 Weighted: .666

NON Lee’s Summit Schools Weighted Credit: Varies by school

The Aerospace Engineering class focuses on flight and aircrafts.
