Computer Integrated Manufacturing: Programming Machines to Do the Work
This exciting course provides students with the fundamentals of computerized manufacturing technology in a global perspective. Students will have individual and team projects in the follow areas of manufacturing: Computer Modeling-using a three dimensional, solid modeling software package with mass property analysis and design interface tools. CNC Equipment – understanding the machinery and tools and their operating and programming aspects. CAM Software – converting computer generated geometry into a program to drive CNC machine tools. Robotics- robotic arm programming and how they are used for materials handling and assembly operations. Flexible Manufacturing Systems – working in teams to design manufacturing work cells and table top factory simulations. The students will interact with industry experts and should expect to be challenged with ideation and creation of projects while working within a set of constraints.
Note: Students need to choose 2 of the following 3 courses (Digital Electronics, Computer Integrated Manufacturing, Aerospace Engineering) to make a full-year selection.
Prerequisites:
- Grade: 11 or 12
- Algebra I, B- or higher
- Reading/Writing at 10th grade level or higher
- 2.5 GPA (Unweighted)
- 90% Attendance
- Outside class Internet access is required.
Recommended Math and Engineering Proficiency:
Average Math and Engineering grade: B- or higher

- Intro to Eng Design
- Principles of Engineering
- Geometry

MIC Accelerated Early Bachelor Degree Program
Students who take Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM)/Digital Electronics (DE) at Summit Technology Academy their junior year AND have a 3.0 unweighted GPA/95% attendance may also choose to participate in a university partnership program called Missouri Innovation Campus (MIC), in which students begin to earn a bachelor’s degree while still in high school. The bachelor’s degree is offered through the University of Central Missouri- Lee’s Summit. This program helps to significantly reduce the overall cost of a bachelor’s degree. Students will also participate in extensive paid internship opportunities with companies such as Burns & McDonnell, Black & Veatch, Grundfos, and KCPL. Students who qualify and have interest, should mark that they are interested on their STA Online Application.
