Medical Interventions™ and Biomedical Innovation™: Discovery and Prevention in Healthcare

This is a year-long course comprised of two related semester courses.

Fall semester:  Medical Interventions™ Students investigate the variety of interventions involved in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease as they follow the lives of a fictitious family. Students conduct experiments while exploring how to prevent and fight infection, how to screen and evaluate the code in human DNA, how to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer, and how to prevail when the organs of the body begin to fail. Students are exposed to a wide range of interventions related to immunology, surgery, genetics, pharmacology, medical devices, and diagnostics.  Students study real world medical problems through laboratory experiences. A background check and TB test is necessary for hospital lab placements.

Spring semester: Biomedical Innovation™ In this capstone course students design and conduct experiments related to the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease or illness. They apply their prior knowledge and skills to solve problems related to Biomedical science. Students may work with a mentor or advisor from a university, hospital, or physician’s office as they complete an Independent Research Project. Students present their Independent Research Project at GKSEF and Union Station. Scholarships are awarded to top winners.  Other course topics include: problems in emergency medicine, forensic autopsy, human anatomy and physiology, molecular biology, epidemiology and water quality.  Students completing all four PLTW Biomedical courses receive a white coat at an end of the year ceremony.

Prerequisites:

  • Grade: 11 or 12
  • 2.5 GPA (Unweighted)
  • 90% Attendance
  • Background check and TB Test (required for hospital placements)
  • Outside class Internet access is required.

COURSE PREREQUISITES:  

PLTW Principles of Biomedical Science™ and PLTW Human Body Systems™ preferred (with a B- or higher)

OR

Two of the following science courses:  

  • Biology with a B- or higher
  • Chemistry with a B- or higher
  • Anatomy-Physiology with a B- or higher
  • Other related sciences with a B- or higher

*Students completing all four PLTW Biomedical courses (PBS, HBS, MI, BI) participate in a special White Coat Ceremony at the end of the year.

Recommended:

  • IB or Advanced Biology and Chemistry
  • AP or Advanced Biology and Chemistry
  • Anatomy/Physiology
  • Other Related Rigorous Chemistry/Bilogy Lab Science Courses

Recommmended PLTW Member School Prerequisites:

  • Principles of Biomedical Science™
  • Human Body Systems™

High School Credits: 3 units

LSR7 Weighted Credit: .666

NON Lee's Summit Schools Weighted Credit: Varies by school

College Credit: Missouri S&T Bio Sci 1993 & 1983 (3 hrs credit each course for students completing the course with a B- or higher and receiving a 6 or higher score on the EOC)

MIC Accelerated Early Bachelor Degree Program Option

Students who take Medical Interventions/Biomedical Innovations at Summit Technology Academy AND have a 3.0 unweighted GPA/95% attendance may also choose to participate in a university partnership program called Missouri Innovation Campus (MIC), in which students begin to earn a bachelor's degree while still in high school.   The Bioinfomatics bachelor's degree is offered through the University of Central Missouri- Lee's Summit.  This program helps to significantly reduce the overall cost of a bachelor's degree.  Students will participate in extensive paid internship opportunities with top companies in the KC area.  Students who qualify and have interest, should mark that they are interested on their STA online application.

KU Degree in 3 Accelerated Early Bachelor Degree Program Option

Students who take Medical Interventions/Biomedical Innovations at Summit Technology Academy AND have a 3.0 unweighted GPA/95% attendance may also choose to participate in a university partnership program called KU Degree in 3 (KUD3), in which students begin to earn a bachelor's degree while still in high school.   Three different bachelor degree options are available and are offered through the University of Kansas- Edwards Campus.  This program helps to significantly reduce the overall cost of an University of Kansas bachelor's degree.  Students will be able to participate in internship opportunities with companies during final two years of this program.  Students who qualify and have interest, should mark that they are interested in the KU Degree in 3 Program on their STA online application.
